Old John Deeres are still on the job

Many older tractors are still in use today doing the same chores they did decades ago. That means tractors don’t have to be “put out to pasture” simply because they are old.

Here’s a case in point. Jeff Kaylor still uses two older John Deere tractors for teddering and raking hay. He says it’s “a good feeling knowing you’re using something your grandfather used to do the same thing.” That’s the great thing about tractors. They can tie generations of a family together with common experiences. Jeff and his grandfather’s experiences with the tractors are separated by time, but the experiences are similar.

Nostalgia is clearly a reason many people keep older tractors working, but there are other reasons, too. Some people prefer older tractors because they are easier to maintain and fix. Unlike modern tractors with computer components and codes, older tractors can be fixed without a lot of sophisticated technology.

Tractors are durable machines. Jeff is still using the older John Deere tractors his grandfather used. If properly maintained, there is no reason he couldn’t pass these tractors on to younger generations in his family.
